This may be related to aircraft radial engines such as in the B-25, B-17, etc. It seems that they consume quite a bit of oil in normal operation-the underside of the wings of the B-17 "Aluminum Overcast" is covered with a thin film of oil, which I assured my friend was to make the plane go faster. Maybe they do change the oil, but in between keep it filled up, each engine has a 35 gallon oil tank, presumably enough to get through a maximum mission.
