An appeal for baby Ty

A young couple near where we live both work at Lowe's.  Their baby was born in August, but has had some serious health problems and been hospitalized for weeks.  The family has posted a GoFundMe to raise money for the insurance deductable.  I know that things are tight for lots of folks, and people in the mountains are hurting from the hurricane, but they're a young couple just starting out - not making a lot of money - and their baby is really, really ill.

Help baby Ty.

Are any readers familiar with configuring Palo Alto Networks gear?

I know Cisco, not Palo Alto.  If any of you do know hoe to do this, Old NFO could use some help.

Help

Not for me, but for Big Country's lovely wife Gretchen.  She's been diagnosed with cancer and any change you can toss her way for medical bills would be greatly appreciated.

I'm late to this and most of you read the other blogs like Divemedica and BC himself, but Gretchen is super nice and way too young to be going through this.

Vote for my granddaughter

#1 Granddaughter  has entered the Miss Teen Rhode Island contest.  If she wins, she will move on to the Miss Teen USA contest.  The pageant is running a voting contest as a fund raiser for mental health awareness and education, and the winners will move on to the semi finals.

Obviously, The Queen Of The World and I are pretty proud and excited about this.  We're asking for your help (and small donation) to help her along.  Voting is here.

Next, I'll be running a fund raiser to get her Dad (the Chief) a shotgun.  For obvious reasons.

Help Big Country save his Grand-daughter

This post is going on the side bar until BCE has his Gran back, but for those who haven't heard, be's in a legal battle royale with his (step) daughter and her boyfriend to get custody of his Granddaughter, Ariana.  She used to live with BCE and Wifey but the Mom took her from Florida to Tennessee.

Never one to walk away from the Good Fight, BCE is fighting (in Court) to get her back.  As you can imagine, this take a LOT of coin.

Here's the description of the situation from the GiveSendGo page:

Adriana Grace came into this world on October 26, 2020 in Kingsport Tennessee. She's a beautiful and inquisitive 22 month old, who means the world to her Gigi and Papi. Unfortunately, her parents are completely incapable, if not downright dangerous. Her birth father/donor she was born to is an abusive person, small minded, petty and viscous. He suffers from 'small man syndrome' (4'11-5ft only) and enjoys hurting smaller and weaker people, especially women and children. He's also someone who has previously lost custody of her older sister Kylie, as well as his child from a previous relationship. He has a slew of arrests for Domestic Violence, (8 arrests, one felony conviction) and her Mother, my step-daughter, Emily suffers from extremely well documented mental health issues from the age of 5 until present day, never mind that she's lazy, entitled and incapable of any sort of basic human decency. Needless to say, they should NOT be raising this child.

I knwo that the economy is in the toilet and money is tight, but even $5 or $10 helps.  BCE is a good man, and this is a Good Fight.

SIG P365 Bleg

The Queen Of The World went out shopping and one of these followed her home:

 It's a classy gun but hey - she's a classy lady, amirite?

So here's the question: any thoughts on a magazine extender?  The pinky finger just barely fits, and the palm is half hanging loose on the other side.  Having something that would drop down a bit would make it easier to grep.

Hunt AAR

A couple weeks ago I posted What deer rifle for an old hunter?  Many of you left comments and I'm happy to say that Tim emails saying that the hunt was a success and he got his deer.  He has a nice After Action Report posted.

I agree with him that the local deer populations seem to be pretty strong.  I used to see them regularly in Maryland and Wolfgang would chase 'em if he got a chance.  He never got close, of course, but if you're a deer in a subdivision then neighborhood dogs will be an occasional encounter.

What deer rifle for an old hunter?

Friend of the Blog Tim Wholer is getting into deer hunting now that he is retired.  He has been borrowing a rifle which is obviously less than ideal.  He is looking for advice on what to look for in a deer rifle and I expect that more than a couple of you will have some good advice.

His post has a picture of the terrain from his tree stand.  It looks wooded, with a fair amount of brush (i.e. no 300 yard shots).

He also has a very interesting question that some of you might have grappled with as well:

It's my hearing that is the problem.

My sons tell me that they generally hear the critters before they see them.  Well, other than the deer that must have nearly crashed into my tree ten minutes before shooting hours started on the Opener (and Lordy that musta been one big, clumsy deer) I pretty much never heard the deer coming.

Now, I do have hearing aides.  These were grudgingly accepted a couple of years back when my Better Half put forth the unanswerable argument that I did not want to miss anything the grand children said.  They are really sophisticated, I can adjust setting from my phone for instance.  But they are also:  A: expensive and B: designed to pick up higher frequency sounds.  Small, delightful child's voices.  Also spousal voices, as it's best not to wait until things are repeated at a volume or in a tone of voice that cannot be missed.

I tried hunting without them, worried that anything lost in the woods would never be found.  I tried hunting with them.  I even tweaked the settings.  There's an outdoor mode.  There are options for volume...crank that up.  And for speech discrimination....crank that down.  But I still can't say I reliably heard the deer. Oh, one or two times I had a dim perception of "something", but that was usually about two seconds before I saw the insolent white tail flashing as the deer ran off.  Really, it's like a stylish middle finger.

Mostly I heard everything else.  Leaves rustling.  Squirrels and small mice cavorting.  A scratchy noise every time my jacket moved against the tree bark.  And at my age every pivot of my neck beyond about 30 degrees causes a crackling noise that sounds like several large deer rolling around in a pile of dry sticks.

If you have any advice or experiences to share, drop by his blog and leave a comment.

GoFundMe for Earthquake relief

Fellow blogger Rev. Paul has suffered a lot of damage from the recent Anchorage earthquake.  There's a GoFundMe campaign to help him through this.  I know that it's the holiday season and things are tight for a lot of folks, but if you have a little bit to spare you'll be helping out one of our own.

Has anyone ever heard of these?

You plug it into your car's computer port and use an app on your phone to download the Check Engine error codes.

They have some slick marketing, but that doesn't mean that the thing is very good.  If it is, then this seems like a pretty handy thing to have.

Here's there web site.

Bleg

Long-time reader and fellow blogger Southeast Texas Pistolero and his wife Sabra have suffered a house fire, and are in a jam.  Any help you can offer (including clothes, bedding, toys, etc) would make a big difference.

Any Macintosh experts out there?

I just got a printer for Castle Borepatch.  The Queen Of The World started a new job and will be doing some working from home, and our old printers were, well, old, slow, and drank lots of expensive ink.  And so we got a nifty new color laser printer.

Alas, that's where my problems started.  When I changed jobs last fall I chose - no doubt in a fit of curiosity or whimsey - a Mac instead of a Windows laptop.  And while the Mac sees the printer over the WiFi, and while the print queue says that everything is happy happy, it won't actually print.

It appears that the print jobs are being sent to the queue as PDF, and from there are going to /dev/null (they sure as heck aren't going to the printer).  The little pull down that says "PDF" below has all sorts of PDF options, but nothing else - and there doesn't seem to be any option along the lines of "Screw PDF, just print the dang thing".

Any thoughts, Oh Mac gurus?  I did have to pull down the newest driver from support.brother.com, but the laptop found the printer just fine via bonjour.

Of course, the Queen Of The World is printing up a storm from her Windows laptop.  And reminding me that technology choices maybe shouldn't be made from whimsey.  Oh bother.

UPDATE 10 June 2016 15:15: Success!  It turns out that configuring the WiFi from the printer's front panel doesn't enable AirPrint, which is what the Mac was looking for. When I downloaded Brother's WiFi setup utility and ran it to set up the WiFi on the printer, it suddenly showed up in the Add Printer selections.  It supposedly will let me print from the phones, too.

So the lesson is that Apple has "Insanely great" but pretty obscure ways of doing basic stuff (like wireless printing).

Motorcycle windscreen bleg

Damn, Uncle Jay sure is pushy.  After dawdling and agonizing for months over which bike to get, he has the audacity to say "Meet you next weekend in Athens".  The nerve of some folks ...

The issue is that the top priority for my new-to-me bike is a windscreen to reduce the wind buffeting on the 2 and a half hour ride.  I imagine that they're not hard to install, but there's not a lot of time between now and Friday.

So what do riders think?  How big is too big?  How small is too small?  Which manufacturers do you like?  Which do you hate?

Does anyone make any money on blog ads?

I've resisted putting up blog ads here because I don't want to annoy you, gentle reader.  However, the traffic here has been ramping up (thank you, gentle reader) and when Captain Capitalism was here he said that I should make the jump.

And alas for my stoutness of heart, it might pay for the better part of a motorcycle.  Sigh - I'm a bit chastened to see just how low is the price for my principles ...

And so, gentle reader - do you care if I put ads up?  Also, if anyone is actually making some money on their blog ads, please shoot me an email.

Advice bleg: all you 18th level Biker-fu masters

The Big Guy has gotten tired of my whining about not getting the next size up motorcycle and has given me a much needed prodding.  So let me ask the collective wisdom of our little corner of teh Intarwebz for any thoughts on some specific choices.

Top Priorities:
Highway worthy heavy and fast enough to be comfortable

Decent seat with sissy bar for riding 2 up

Low enough to be comfortably flat footed at a stop

Inexpensive enough that there's no reason for me to say no

Will probably only put on 5k miles a year, at least for a bit

Ideally light weight within these parameters
Looking around Cycletrader, there are two offers that seem to fit this list:

1. 2004 Yamaha V Star Classic 650, 32k miles

2. 2001 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100, 16k miles (this one has small bags that would be handy for day trips)

Anyone have any experience with either of these?  What's the reputation of the bikes.  My Honda Rebel seems pretty much indestructible, but I've only ridden it a thousand miles or so since I got it in August.

UPDATE: This Kawasaki Vulcan 750 looks pretty nice, but is about 50% more expensive (still not too expensive, though).  Any thoughts?

So what should I do for Halloween pumpkins this year?

I always carve jack o'lanterns for Halloween.  This year things have been so hectic that I don't have any ideas on what to carve.  Any thoughts?

Is there any reason not to buy this morotcycle?

2008 Yamaha V-Star 650 Silverado, 14,000 miles, under $3k.

The local Harley dealer has it marked down by $750 to get rid of it.  Test rode it today.

It has some fancy after market (LOUD) pipes that I'd want to get rid of.  Yes, I know the whole "loud pipes save lives" thing; I also know the whole "loud pipes make you go deaf" thing.  Maybe someone would swap me for stock pipes because these seem to be worth something.

The price seems pretty good for a decently late-ish bike with not too many miles.  I'd be able to meet up with the Big Guy in Apalachicola, and he wouldn't kick my butt for passing this up.

It still seems like an intermediate bike between the Rebel and a full sized bike, but I still don't feel comfortable on the 1300s.  At the price I could get rid of it in a year or two on a bigger model.

Thoughts?

Awesomesauce

Yesterday I put up a post asking for people's experience and opinion.  So far, 17 (!) people left their thoughts.

The Internet sure is a neat place

Having read everyone's ideas, I'm reminded of when I was starting to shoot.  As a POMM (Prisoner Of Mother Massachusetts), I would go shooting at blogshoots and ranges where I could rent different guns.  I shot a lot of different types before I moved to Georgia and bought one.  By then I knew what I wanted.

It seems that it wouldn't hurt to do the same thing with bikes - ride a bunch and see what I like.  Have to figure out how to do that.

But thank you to everyone who left their thoughts.  This is an awesome community.

Help me, Obi-Wan Intarwebz. You're my only hope.

While Princess Leia didn't ride a bike, I do.  And since the V-Strom is out, I'm looking around for something different.  I need something bigger than my Honda Rebel 250 (the kids will do a Cage Match to see who gets it; #1 Son is bigger, but #2 Son has that JROTC bayonet training, so it'll be close).  I want something that I can cruise several hundred miles in a day, so that Uncle Jay and I can go to watch the freaks at Key West, or go shoot up a range at Dallas or something.

I'm looking at baggers now, because a bunch of y'all left something like 800 comments saying I should look at them (and thank you for that!).  Currently what I'm seeing is sort of like this:

Honda Shadow 750.

Yamaha VStar 650.

Harley Sporter 883.

Suzuki Intruder.

Kawasaki Vulcan.

There must be other options, but the V-Star was WAY too tall for a bike that heavy.  I'm looking for something that a six foot guy can be flat footed when he stops.  I expect weight is less important than height, but that's a guess.

I doubt that I'd ever go more than 500 miles in a day, and likely half that.  Roswell GA to Myrtle Beach is a hair under 400 miles; Roswell to JAX to meet up with Uncle Jay is a bit less.

So what do you say?  Comment away.
