Lord Stern: 2009 Upper Class Twit of the Year

Seems that his Lordship offered up a trifecta of fail to The (London) Times:
He ... issued a clear message to President Obama that he must attend the meeting in Copenhagen in person in order for an effective deal to be reached. US leadership, he said, was “desperately needed” to secure a deal.
Fail.
He said that he was deeply concerned that popular opinion had so far failed to grasp the scale of the changes needed to address climate change, or of the importance of the UN meeting in Copenhagen from December 7 to December 18. “I am not sure that people fully understand what we are talking about or the kind of changes that will be necessary,” he added.
Fail.

People will need to turn vegetarian if the world is to conquer climate change, according to a leading authority on global warming.

... Lord Stern ... said: “Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources. A vegetarian diet is better.”

...

Lord Stern, who said that he was not a strict vegetarian himself, was speaking on the eve of an all-parliamentary debate on climate change.

Well, now.

Lord Stern and I can agree at least that animals are guilty of being full of yummy meat. Unlike his lordship, I cheerfully acknowledge this. Also, I'm not so full of myself that I think I can sweet talk the public to giving up what I won't.

Turn out the light, the competition's over:

Hat tip: Watts Up With That.

Cannibalism is the answer. Those who consider that repulsive can feed their pets the remains of vegetarian environmentalists. My cats could stand to be on a leaner diet.

Cannibalism isn't the answer either.

Let me explain: plants use photosynthesis to turn death-dealing CO2 into life-giving O2. Killing plants merely to eat them reduces their ability to reduce the level of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Eating meat, OTOH, is BENEFICIAL to the planet. Instead of destroying O2-generating plants, we kill and eat animals who would be eating those plants only to give us more CO2 and methane (another greenhouse gas).

More? We can even WEAR meat! Leather shoes, belts, coats, boots -- all of these products are completely biodegradable and eventually break down into their organic constituents. Instead of polluting the earth, they FEED Mother Gaia!

So, lets get busy SAVING the earth! Stop eating those tofu and bean sprout salads and wearing your vinyl made-in-China Ho-Chi-Minh sandals! Eat meat and wear leather! It's the "green" thing to do!!!

Burt, that's simply brilliant.

Thanks for this post. I used to eat red meat many times a week. Not only do I get tired easily and feel depressed, I also feel very heavy. I hate stairs, I don't like long walk and most especially I don't run. Somebody advised me to change my eating habit. It was not easy, but I did it anyways. I now eat white meat, more veggies and fruits and lots of drinking water. And then, there was a change, I'm happy, I'm smaller, I can go through the stairs, though I still prefer the elevator if there's any, I can run and I can do long walk. Most of all, I'm healthier. I'm doing this for my health and not for global warming. And if I am contributing to save the earth, then so be it.
