The saddest Valentine's Day ever

Teddy Roosevelt's diary, February 14, 1884:

His wife, Alice, died two days after giving birth to their daughter.  May you have a much nicer day, and remember those who don't.

Poignant.

In spite of differences of opinion with him in some areas, I consider TR a Giant and one of my favorite people ever to hold the office of President.

His mother Mittie died of typhoid fever on the same day, at 3 am, some eleven hours earlier, in the same house. There are some things that would break most people.

I just finished the audiobook version of The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt during a long-ish road trip. I hadn't realized (or maybe hadn't remembered) that this took place on Valentine's Day. I highly recommend the book, by the way.
