Tolerance, good temper and sympathy — they are what matter really, and if the human race is not to collapse they must come to the front before long.

I'm not surprised. Corporations tend to castrate managers who give away margin, and most of 'em are looking to the year-end feeding frenzy to make up for a crappy year.I learned the ugly truth about going out of business sales years ago. The "30% off everything in the store" advertised in the window is taken off of the list price, not the store's "everyday low price." By the time they get to the 50% and 75% markdowns, the only product left is junk that nobody wants. All the good stuff was bought at what used to be the store's regular price (or maybe a little more) by clueless people who thought they were getting a deal.
My mother worked at a W.T. Grant department store in the early '60s and she said it was amazing - all they had to do was put a "Two for $1" sign on things that normally cost 50 cents and stuff they couldn't move before would fly out.
There are stores in NYC Times Square that have been holding "Going Out Of Business" sales forever... heh...
