Isegoria finds a must-read article on the history of gun control, which includes this gem of forgotten lore:

[I don't] know of any sportsman who leaves his home with a gun to go out into the field to hunt or for target shooting who carries that gun loaded.

That's Ronald Reagan, currently beatified by the Republican Party.  Which goes to show that neither party is our friend.  The only thing we can count on is ourselves, voting out the statist bastards who try this sort of power grabbing nonsense.
