I'm your huckleberry

While looking for the video for yesterday's post, I ran across some collections of Val Kilmer's performance in Tombstone.

I'd forgotten just how fabulous his performance was.  The scene where he and Johnny Ringo speak in Latin is worth the entire price of admission, just by itself.

While Tombstone was a good, entertaining movie, I found it to be too camp and too historically inaccurate to really appreciate. If you want to see the OK Corral gunfight in a way that comes close to historical accounts, you should look instead to Kevin Costner's underappreciated Wyatt Earp. In that movie Dennis Quaid plays Doc Holliday as historical accounts have him: a drunk with a violent temper. There are great scenes, though, such as Wyatt's first meeting with Doc, or of Doc cursing passersby (All of you can kiss my Rebel dick!) or Doc plotting with Morgan Earp to kill the Clantons and McLaury's as they walk down the street toward the OK Corral (taken from eyewitness accounts).

In short, Wyatt Earp isn't as exciting and fun as Tombstone - - but then, neither was history.
