... that I'd never taken the kids to a Renaissance Festival?
#1 Son is away visiting friends, but #2 Son was completely taken in by the whole spectacle. Come for the jousting, stay for the chicks in corsets. Or something.
What a fun day. Only way it could have been better is if JayG had come with us, dressed up in Ren Faire finery and carrying his Bat'leth.

Pity you hadn't mentioned. King Richard's Faire is in Carver, MA from late August until Columbus Day.
I could bring the bat'leth - or my medieval armaments...
King Richard's Faire is totally awesome. The ren faire here in upstate NY doesn't compare unfortunetly. Cool, but not as cool.
Well I have attended in middle Tennessee and a jolly we soaked time it was and the jousting was called off.
However being from England I can never understand the obsession with medieval history here in the USA.
We could see ancient history all around us everyday with the 800 year old plus Norman church with battlements the town wall which was never impressive but kept the brigands out. The numerous castles because I lived in the land of the Prince Bishops of Durham the Romanesque cathedral and castle guarding it. The Roman military road running through the village and the fact the village had been settled since roman times providing goods to be used for the garrisons stationed on Hadrian's wall.
So history is just part of life for us and you may wish to note the 500th anniversary of Flodden coming up in 2013. When the Scots unprovoked attacked England and suffered their greatest ever military defeat and is remembered in song for not a noble family in Scotland did not suffer great loss.
What we need is jousting chicks in corsets. That would pack 'em in.
I took a couple from Britain to the above-mentioned King Richard's Faire and one of them got slammed for their 'poor and unbelievable' accent. I did get to see someone lurking dressed as Raistlyn, complete with contact lenses, once too. Love the Ren Faires!
How can it be I've never gone to one?
I've been going to the one in Maryland for many years, since our daughter was small (she's now 21). I like the music (especially The Rogues, the best damn bagpipe band in the world), the sights, and the chance to win free beer by throwing hand axes at a target. There are also some talented craftspeople there. Good times!
