It was performance art. His talent was punking the entire Northeast Art Community, and he did it again, and again, and again. A "Top Carnivore" is the predatory species in an ecosystem that will prey on anything, including other predators. Think Grizzly Bear or Orca. Mark Rothko was a top carnivore in New York City, preying on Captains of Industry and assorted Robber Barons (both public sector and private sector).

Ya gotta appreciate it. Not the painting, the flim flam.
Rothko's painting Voice of Fire got picked up by the National Gallery of Canada for a cool 1.8 million.
3 frickin' strips of paint.
People pointed out their kids could paint it, and paint it better.
Meanwhile all the bien pensants were busy falling all over themselves over how great an artwork it was and how the great unwashed just didn't understand such an important work that needed to be acquired with taxpayer dollars.
Something to be said there about the delusions of the elites.
