This is one of the best ads I've seen

I imagine that most people don't need this at all.  Everybody else needs it really badly.

I'm wondering why he didn't keep a better watch. Once he saw the ship wasn't turning, he should have manuvered to avoid collision.

He's the "stand on vessel," but running into another ship is frowned on, even if you're not at fault.

Sean, I think this was the point of an advert for training.

I was kinda hoping for a pirate raid and him breaking out a handful of Ma-Duces! :)

I knew a guy who designed hi-res (for the time) video systems back in the early 80s. They went in flight simulators used by Lufthansa to train & re-qualify pilots.

The requalification test included a simulated flight emergency, usually on takeoff or landing. The absolutely most-hated test scenario among the pilots was of a bread truck driving across the runway just as the plane touched down.

Yeah, there ARE times when the Stand On has to maneuver... And anything inside 10nm is way too close!

Even if you are doing everything correctly, if you bump, you are at fault. Not fully at fault but enough to start looking for work in another field.

I've done that size ship driving. All other captains besides yours and maybe your countrymen are crazy and want to embarass you by running into you.

@Old NFO I agree, but I would much rather them stay 10NM / 10nmi (nautical miles) apart. My shave doesn't cut 10nm (nano meters).

OK Typo harassing Old NFO aside, I block flash by default and when I saw the title like "ship accident SMS I thought it was going to be about not texting and boating at the same time.

It's not like he didn't have an hour to avoid that collision.

He had plenty of time to drink that coffee.

Not really. They were both steaming at 17 knots at 90 degrees so estimate a closing speed of 23 knots. Plus with a visual range of maybe 6. So figure not more than 15 minutes

But there are not that many places where shipping lanes intersect at right angles so they at least should have been doing a better job of watching for traffic
