U.S. Navy Death Ray laser 1, target boat 0
The laser (sorry, "LASER") set the engines on fire. Not too impressive, right? Except this test was with a 15 kW model. The planned combat version is 100 kW, eight times more powerful.
Now maybe the Navy can tell our enemies that we'll shoot them with the "laser" if they don't pay us ONE MILLION DOLLARS!
So. if I was on the boat and had a set welders goggles and a mirror, could I deflect the beam to a secondary target? Like the laser generator that is pointed at my boat?

Now if we could just get some sharks with LASER beams the Navy would be dialed in.
WHY OH WHY did they test it on that nice boat?? They should have tested it on some of the Somali Pirates rigs instead!! DAmn it!!
Waste of taxpayer money. Those Mercury outboards aren't cheap. Such a waste!! Stupid!
Why not start some junker OB on fire. It'd prove the same thing, wouldn't it?
Saw this on TV this morning. Mrs. Graybeard's comment was, "Mother's day is coming, you know". Serious want.
I notice they didn't try to do anything else to that little boat. I wonder if it would cut a person on a dotted line.

Graybeard, that laser would probably give a nasty burn but I doubt it'll cut through anybody. Might be good for erasing a tattoo at 800 meters though.
I'd be more impressed with this demonstration if the motor they set on fire was white. Black absorbs light while white would reflect it away.
Gah! What idiot thought lighting up 10K in outboards (plus collateral damage to the boat) was a good idea?
I agree with Mrs Graybeard. This would make a lovely Mother's Day gift...
