It was Unrouted on this day in 1985. If there's a better example that the Federal Government agencies are staffed with nincompoops, I don't know what it is. Don't believe me? Watch.
The road was so iconic that it inspired iconic music (recorded by everyone). And so the Federales say nah - let's get rid of that.Think you could eliminate the entire office that did that and nobody in the Republic would notice.

Still mostly in NM. Old forts, cathedrals, just what works.
They say old N14 is the old Chilsom trail, old buffalo trail.
Well, I have dug up some old spurs, older ones even have Conquistador helmets, and bags of sliver Spanish crosses.
I live here, neon signs, and dinosaur bones.
Yep, it was a great road to drive, you really DID see America!!! Sigh...
Old NFO, you actually see a lot of America on I-20. Especially if you cut down to Waco through Tyler and Corsicana.
Ask me how I know. ;-)
Best version yet...

Yep, Asleep at the Wheel.
Sdv1949, I love me some Asleep At The Wheel.
1985, you say? So why did Reagan hate America? {g}
I'm actually glad we're not paying maintenance on what would essentially be a useless roadway in this day and age.
Sorry, but I'm too young to do nostalgia too much, and I've seen way to much money spent "restoring" shitty old buildings because "historic significance" and now that we've spent three times what it would have cost to just raze it and build a new building, no one wants to use it because no matter how much lipstick you put on it, it's still a shitty old building that doesn't lay out well for modern uses.
Nostalgia costs us a metric shit ton of money every year, and denies us some of th most prime real estate we've got, just so people can "feel" good about "saving" an obsolete, useless building.
"saving" route 66 would be much the same, my humble opinion...
