On one hand, I can see why a scientist who is losing his US Government grant (and therefore likely his job) would look for a different (paying) gig. On the other hand, it's hard to see how claims of "scientific independence" can possibly apply to the research done by these scientists. Hopefully, they will never come back but will stay in France and help with the long-term project of completely destroying the French economy. One of the amazing things about the French is they have been amazing innovators in many fields. Science, medicine, aviation, automotive , even military. Yet they always seem to lose out to Brits or Germans or Americans. It has got to be the government. It wasn't Stalin who invented over-centralization, it was Louis XIV.
