What this country needs is some Common Sense Gun Police Control

How many more children must die?
Police in Detroit, Michigan, on Sunday expressed "profound sorrow" at the fatal shooting of a 7-year-old girl in a police raid.

Aiyana Jones was shot and killed by police executing a search warrant as part of a homicide investigation, Assistant Chief Ralph Godbee said in a statement.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Miss Jones' family.

I was a cop for 27 years. We don't need more cops, or better guns, what we need is better educated - and MUCH better paid - cops.

Everyone is sorry for the little girl. But horrible things sometimes happen. They're not to be excused, but very much regretted.

This sort of thing happens 100-150 times a DAY!

Wofat, I think that the police are in a tough situation, especially the stupid war on drugs thing. It gets cops shot.

But just like with Waco, there needs to be an appreciation for when to go in and when to wait for him to come out.

I personally believe there should never be a dynamic entry unless human life is immediately at risk. You put a bunch of people in a jumbled up situation with firearms, and you just know this is going to happen.

Police officers are supposed to protect children and innocents, not gun them down. The lady who engaged in a physical confrontation was not deserving of a deadly force response. The cops there cannot deal with a woman without discharging a weapon into the head of a 7 year old girl, even if it WAS an accident?

The police officers that perform these raids are supposed to be the best trained officers on the force. Surely they have been schooled in the four rules? Surely they must be aware that when you carry a firearm, you are responsible for EVERY bullet that comes out of that gun.

Let's not mix apples and snails. These cops were not after a stash of grass, they were after a murder suspect.

Whether they should have gone in or not is hard to judge without a lot more information about the case. As WoFat said, sometimes horrible things happen. The real fault here lies with the original murder suspect, and whoever was letting him hide in their house. No murder, no cops, no raid, no dead little girl.

The reason for the no knock raid wasn't concern for anyone's safety but that of the police. They could have secured the perimeter then served the warrant or waited him out. When the police put their own safety ahead of everyone else we're screwed. No raid, no dead little girl.
