This schematic map shows a simplification of the world’s network of submarine fibre-optic cables.Confession: when I first heard the term "submarine cable" I thought that this was some sort of MIL-SPEC for the Navy. I was young.
Data
The map uses data sourced from cablemap.info. Each node has been assigned to a country, and all nodes located in the same country have been collapsed into a single node. The resulting network has been then abstracted.

For a long time I thought trans-oceanic cables had long since been supplanted by satellite relays. But then I saw a show (might have been Nova) about NSA comms surveillance and how they straddle a fiber cable from the Far East that comes ashore in California.
They showed where the cable arrived on land. It looks kind of like a storm drain outflow. Very nondescript. Some half-wit with a Bobcat could probably take it out.
