2cents emails to point to this article that pushes back the date of baseball's invention by at least 100 years. Abner Doubleday could not be reached for comment, but the whole Doubleday story was never very convincing anyway.
And what's coolest about the story was that this was discovered by an amateur historian, not professional ones.

Forgive the pun but this is old news.
However why should it surprise anyone, lots of games were invented in rural Briton thanks to the relative lack of warfare compared with continental Europe.
Hey, continental Europe had lots of games. It's just that most of them were variations on "hide the coins, livestock, and daughters from the soldiers".
