The device, known as “Dcentral,” will reportedly cost around $100 and fit into a pants pocket. In a speech at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center over the weekend, McAfee suggested that the hardware would create private device networks impenetrable to outsiders, even those with the most sophisticated technology. The network’s range would be roughly three blocks; McAfee believes that he can have a prototype up and running within six months.A year ago I would have rolled my eyes, because he's at least 50% bat-s**t crazy. Now, I'm not so sure. That makes me wonder if I'm being trolled.
“We have the design in place, we’re looking for partners for development of the hardware,” he told the audience, according to The Verge. He also admitted that criminals could surely find a use for a decentralized, uncrackable network: “Of course it will be used for nefarious purposes, just like the telephone is used for nefarious purposes.”

Right now I'd call it plausible. We can do wireless at that range easily enough. There are plenty of encryption methods to choose from and more being developed all the time. When you add spread-spectrum frequency movement with a proper spreading code (the equivalent of a crypto key) you get comms that are a LOT harder to crack than the Internet. (After all, most of what the NSA gets from the 'Net is given to them by the people who operate it.)
