Beverly Sills, La Traviata, and Mom

Saturday always meant the Texaco Metropolitan Radio Network on Saturdays.  No matter what she was doing, Mom would always tune in and listen while she was doing whatever was on her to do list. In the 1970s, this meant that Beverly Sills was heard around the house rather a lot.

And for good reason.  She was one of the great sopranos of the time.  She was also very popular beyond opera circles, no doubt due to her irrepressible personality (she was often referred to by her nickname, "Bubbles").  Here she is on the Muppet Show singing "Pigoletto".  I remember Mom particularly enjoying this episode.

It was a time when a much broader segment of the population would follow art.  When Sills retired from the Met in 1980, Carol Burnett sang a duet with Bubbles.  Of course it was televised.

It was a different world.  But Mom loved all this music.  Happy Mother's Day to all Moms out there.

A lovely remembrance, your Mom would be proud.

My Mom's favorites were Broadway shows, she would play "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" on the record player.

Happy Mothers Day to all mothers out there.
