Idiots with chainsaws

I quite frankly can't understand how some of this didn't end up in the Darwin Awards.

There's a tree guy named Daniel Murphy on YouTube who has a whole video devoted to using ladders when cutting on trees. It's worth seeing what he had to say. The logger with the tree that barber-poled wasn't being dumb, he just had some bad luck.

well, I guess I don't feel quite so bad. There are people dumber than I.

Apparently whole clans of them.

I take pictures of bad stumps when I run across them. Some of them involved serious injury and death. Chainsaws are fun, sort of like guns, but more dangerous. There are 24 safety rules for saws, but they are not gathered up in one spot in any chainsaw manual; they are scattered through the references for the new chainsaw owner to ferret out. The US Forest Service continues to promote using saws as if they are crosscut saws, and they do not teach their fire fighters how to set up a tree with bore-cutting. Western loggers tend to stay away from bore-cutting, too, and the rotten tree that collapsed in the video might have behaved if it had been hinged with a bore-cut first. Rotten trees are risky, and I am glad that guy got away. I have had to sidestep a few, and it pays to dope out the possibilities before you stick your saw in it.

Weight and lean are neglected in the manuals, too, and it is the rare instructor who can teach what you need to know. Most are afraid of putting numbers out there for fear of liability.
