Well, you don't have to bother, because I signed myself and #2 Son up for the June 9-10 Project Appleseed in Waco, GA. I heard that all the Cool Kids would be there. The 'Patch is going for his patch, so to speak.
I have new military sights for the 10/22 from Tech Sights, and a new web sling for the thing, too. Need to pick up some more 10 round magazines, but that should be pretty easy.
#2 Son wants to try out for the JROTC rifle squad next year, and so this will be a good foundation for him. Me, I'd like to shoot "expert" like Dad did in Basic - he was quite proud of that - but he had 20 year old eyes back then and mine are (ahem) a little older. Still, if you don't have a goal, you'll never reach it.
Next step: join the Garand Collector's Association. Then it's a trip to Anniston, AL in mid-June. For a change, I'll be quite happy driving west on I-20.
Needless to say, I'm quite psyched about the whole thing.

Great! I bought a Special Grade Garand from the CMP and I think it is the best value. Mine was manufactured in 1942, and must have some stories to tell.
When I attended, years ago, I used my M1A and slung over 600 rounds of .30 caliber down range. I suppose all the new kids use .22's now a days. I'm such a dinosaur.
Thanks for reminding me. I've been waiting for an Appleseed event around here so I need to go check the calendar. I wonder how I'd do with the PSL.
Bring lots of ammunition, a good shooting mat, elbow pads, at least 4 mags or a tri-mag for your mags, a hat with brim, an open mind and clear eyes.
You will enjoy yourself enormously!
Wear your Rifleman patch with pride, 'cause you will have earned it.
Good on ya. This is one of my goals this year also.
Enjoy and DO join GCA, that gives you access to the ammo and other items via the CMP website. :-) And shoot em good!
I will look forward to hearing about your Appleseed experience. You can also become a member of a CMP affiliated club by joining RWVA ($20/yr). This allows you to order CMP rifles and ammo and it also allows you to keep going to Appleseed events without cost until you either score Rifleman or the card expires in a year. You can buy the membership at the shoot or online.
The Garand Collectors Association publishes a first rate journal every quarter, and it is well worth the membership fee for that alone.
As for the Appleseed, I went 4 years ago in Piru. I would recommend something for shade, water, snacks, some electrolyte replenisher, and a couple of salty snacks. It was hot there and I imagine you'll have it hot in GA, too.
In 2008 I used my K-31 which I had improved with the left hand adaptor and the Furter sight. Others there used the Mosin Nagant, the M-1 Carbine, and the SKS, although the most numerous rifle was the 10/22. My shoulder began to hurt about half way through at about round #65 from shooting the full house battle caliber from prone.
No excuses. Eyes, back, age, just stuff the excuse somewhere and work on the shooting.
You need to be able to focus on the front sight post. If you can't do that, then glasses appropriate to the task are in order.
Then get some practice in.
I didn't qualify the first time because my eyes are too old and weren't all that good when I was younger. I used Tech Sights the first day, but switched to a scope for the second day.
My score improved enough that I'm convinced that if I had used a scope on the first day, I'd have qualified.
I'm going back when I have a free weekend that matches an Appleseed.
I WILL get that patch.
We hope you made it home OK Saturday night, and we'd be happy for feedback on the after action report which you can find on the Appleseed Forum.
