Caveat fissura*

Via I Want A New Left, here's an outstanding London Tube style map of the ancient Roman roads in Britannia.

And remember, Stanford's Orbis project will tell you how long a trip in the Roman Empire would take.

There is an excellent book called Travel in the Ancient World by Lionel Casson that goes into great detail about old-timey travel. He goes into who was doing it and why (merchants, pilgrims, tourist, etc.) and discusses taverns, inns and popular destinations. If you like that sort of stuff I highly recommend it.

I've been on a number of these roads. Sometimes driving along at 120 kph. Sometimes walking through a pasture with no company but sheep.

I got a chuckle out of the title. "Mind the gap." Ha!
