Not only do they work pretty much anywhere , they are practically indestructible, available at various price points.

Unfortunately the stores that previously sold them have mostly all disappeared.

I always want to hit up the used book stores. Hubby not so much.
Be safe and God bless.

Library sales can be good sources, as can Half Price Books (both hit-or-miss, so you may need to haunt) if you have one nearby. The last library-sale haul netted me a nifty verse translation of Beowulf and Vol. II of The Gulag Archipelago. My last trip through HPB got me a 50th anniversary edition of Mauldin's Up Front and a trade paperback of Karnow's Vietnam: A History.

Look for used bookstores when you travel. It's amazing what you can/might find!
