Well, here's a window into why they think that way:
"Hey nothing personal when I shot you, it was just politics."“The security guard here is a hero, as far as I’m concerned,” D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said. ”He did his job. The person never made it past the front.”The guard, who was not identified, was shot in the arm and was conscious after the shooting and was in stable condition. The gunman, who also was not identified, was being questioned by the FBI, sources said. Sources said he is in his twenties....Sources told Fox New that after guard took away his gun, the suspect said, "Don't shoot me, it was not about you, it was what this place stands for."
No wonder they want to take everyone's guns. If they had any themselves, they'd start shooting the local GOP offices up. Oh, wait.
My big reason to oppose more gun control laws used to be that I think that the proponents don't have the slightest idea what they're talking about and that the new laws will be ineffective or counter productive. Now I'm starting to think that there's simply no reasoning with a wild fire, and that all proposed gun control laws should be rejected out of hand, without consideration, because they are presumed to be malicious in nature until proven otherwise.
I would support criminal control laws doubling sentences for politically motivated shootings. How's that for a compromise?

You gain wisdom, grasshopper. ;-)
There is no reasoning with Progressives, for the same reason there is no reasoning with religious fanatics.
Reason, facts, history, evidence: irrelevant. Only feelings matter.
The Left has always accused the Right of being untrustworthy, because IT is itself untrustworthy - and cannot conceive of anyone being otherwise.
I've even pretty much stopped reading even anything that is a pro-second amendment person fisking anti's, because the anti's won't listen and I've already heard the pro stuff over and over. Yeah, yeah, got to keep on top of them or else they'll go all 1994 on gun owners again--but with all the growth in gun ownership lately, I just can't see the anti's getting anywhere.
It's just projection. The same man who tells you he doesn't trust you to walk around armed because you might lose your patience and use your weapon is exactly the sort of person who would do such a thing.

Sounds like a thought crime law to me. The motivation should be irrelevant, law should only involve overt acts.
Double sentence? Twice as long
with three meals, TV, weight room,
full medical/dental/vision?
How about a shorter sentence.
Something like:
"You shall be taken to the place from whence you came, and from there be taken to a place of execution. You shall be hung by the neck until the body be dead... dead... DEAD!"
Shouldn't take more than 24 hrs--
Hm. How 'bout, "when I shoot you, it won't be personal, it was what your actions stood for."
Action, meet consequence.
Just pause for a moment and think about your cousins across the Pond.
We are not allowed to own a handgun of any description. Period.
Long guns? How about intensive police and security checks taking over a year? And that's just for a .22 rifle!
A speeding fine is all it takes to get your licence revoked.
Only the criminals are armed here in the UK. Today a crim killed two women Police Officers with his semi-auto pistol and a hand grenade.
The law abiding population has been disarmed and is prey to the criminal faction in our midst.
