Wolfgang isn't doing well, and won't get better. While he doesn't have hip displasia, his hip joints are worn out - it's bone on bone. He really can't run very well, and we are working on pain management.
Quite frankly, we think he's living on borrowed time. Every day is a win, as long as his pain is manageable. But we see the trajectory.
So I'm starting a new recurring feature, an ongoing tribute to our 4 legged soul mate.
Wolfgang and friends at the dog park. He has regular dog buddies, which he really likes. My old dog Jack was only socialized to a certain extent, but Wolfgang likes all dogs and all kids.

It is hard, I know. But being the Human is a difficult task sometimes.
I had to put my German Shepherd down a few months ago. She DID have hip dysplasia. She was a good dog for 12 years; 8 years more than the vet said we'd get out of her when she was diagnosed at 6 months. I'll miss that one...

Agree with all the above. Dogs are heaven sent, at some point, The Lord wants them to start preparing a place for you. Doing the right thing for them at the right time is hard, but necessary. Hang in there.
Have you considered getting him a younger female companion?
He is a wonderful, gentle dog. I loved meeting him. I hope he can enjoy a pain-free live for the time he has left. And a few dog treats don’t hurt.

I'm sorry the end is coming for your compadre. Losing a member of the family is hard.
Sadly, I know once again where you are at. Our Sadie, a 12-year-old Yellow Lab, is also coming to the end of her trail. I know the day will come soon when we'll have to say our goodbyes, and I'm not looking forward to it.
We try our best to manage her pain and make her days comfortable. Maybe someday there will be another dog in our old house, but there will never be a replacement. Not for Sadie, and I'm very sure not for Wolfgang. Our prayers are with you all.
Sorry to hear it. This is the tough time part of owning a dog. We've all gone through it, some of us multiple times, but it never gets easier. We all try to do what's best for our furry pals.
Wow - I remember like yesterday when he was new in your life - at least the question "Who's a good boy" has been definitively answered.
I've been through that decision tree many times and it never gets any easier.
I'll have to echo Mike above, he had a wonderful personality and I enjoyed meeting him.
