Your Memorial Day must read

PFC Albert Dentino was wounded in action against German tanks on the western front.  He died four days before his 23rd birthday in December, 1944.

He's known as Great Uncle Albert.  You can read his story here.

Thanks. And a sad statement that it took 60 years for his memory to be memorialized. But I grew up with WWII sailors and soldiers who wanted nothing more than to put the war behind them, and the families did the same. Our family was extremely lucky, everyone came back.

OldAFSarge, thank you for posting it.

Kris, I'm sorry for your family's loss. Thank you for honoring his memory this way.

Old NFO, my best friend's dad was one of those guys. He didn't start talking about his experiences until the late 90s. He wanted us to know about his buddies that didn't make it back.

It is SO true about the lack of remembering. Every house on the street Albert grew up on - lost a son in WWII. Just in Worcester County MA (where he lived) nearly 1,300 men died in WWII. Albert's older brother enlisted after Pearl Harbor - and thankfully came home. It was not uncommon for families to just move on with their lives; not deliberately forgetting but for their own survival.
