Obama actually didn't do anything to push gun control, other than flap his jaws. The Republicans? They've been trying to cozy up to more gun control for years. I guess they think that they'll get invited to nicer parties or something. It's a good thing for gun owners that Mitt Romney lost in 2012.
And the NRA is (once again) tits on a bull.

I think we've reached the point where all the demands for more restrictions on guns is ignored by those with guns. It's all hype, with rhetorical talking points, and the realization by politicians they can talk about such things, but attempting to enforce will lead to disaster. The only thing left is whether they're foolish enough to try.
Jess, if we're lucky we've reached the point where both sides know that nothing major is going to happen (at least regarding new legislation) and the issue is just kept alive to rile everyone up and fundraise.
If we're lucky.
Use the money you would have spent on the NRA and buy more guns, more ammunition!
My gun club required NRA membership for insurance. The only thing that was good about it was Tam’s column in “Shooting Illustrated.”
