US Navy research vessel Petrel tips over in drydock

Well this isn't something that you see every day.

Massive difference in size, but when I was a kid a tugboat rolled over in a drydock in New Orleans, but that was when the dock was rising/pumping out and the tug versus support placements weren't properly aligned, I guess. I've never heard of a vessel rolling over once everything was in place and the dock was dry.

Wonder what THAT sounded like.

Yeah; that was my take; slowly refloat the ship and then re-cradle it. That's gonna scrape some paint!

I was working on a Coast Guard buoy tender in drydock when they decided to refloat it. First off, the lights went out as the crew pulled the shore tie. The emergency lighting didn't come on for whatever reason. I can tell you this; there is no darker place than the inside of a ship with no lighting, except, perhaps, the grave!!! The refloating process was quite rapid. When the ship slipped its cradle and dropped into the water it rolled quite a bit, the experience enhanced by the total darkness inside the ship! From that day on, I ALWAYS had a mini-Maglite on my belt when on duty! To this day, even though retired from the Coast Guard, I STILL wear a light on my belt when at work!

There are still questions as to sabotage... sigh
