Ahhhhhh

The air conditioning is working again, after almost 2 weeks of (partial) outage.  Makes me think we'd solve half the Republic's problems by banning air conditioning in Washington, D.C.

If global warming is real, air conditioning is a contributing factor. Air conditioning uses electricity and we are still burning fossil fuels to make electricity.

Additionally, air conditioning machines make ore heat than they do cold. Any energy used to make the cold air on one side of the machine generates more heat on the outside of the machine. If you put the air conditioner in the middle of the room and turn it on, the room gets warmer.

I now expect our elected leaders to turn off all their air conditioning to save the planet.

Borepatch, glad that yours is back on. And that is a brilliant methodology to resolving our issues - I would only add that when Congress is in session, we could also add "not showering" to the lack of air conditioning. Things would perhaps get resolved more quickly.

ASTM826 - Actually I saw a study (maybe last week) by a group of scientists essentially proposing a version of that, that fans would probably be sufficient for younger people instead of air conditioning because of the impact on the planet.

Stick a heat exchanger down to the permafrost, or whatever its equivalent is way down South, and use it as the sink / heat pump. Already being installed in expensive homes.

Got rid of the in-laws-who-would-never-leave when the house AC crapped out and Mrs. Andrew and I got a window ac for just our bedroom.

Poof, two years after they were supposed to be gone, they left in less than a week.

I would still consider picking up a small window unit to keep on the shelf as a backup or in case power goes out and you need to run off a generator. Something to keep the bedroom cool could be a lifesaver, and you should be able to find one for less than what a couple of nights in a hotel would cost.
