Here in Houston my wife and I have walked trails past gators that were sunning themselves. An 8 foot gator just on the other side of the path (7-8 feet wide) will make your eyes pop, especially when they start opening and closing their mouth.
It's hard to judge size without some better perspective than the photo gives.
but in all honesty, with all of the water hazards, and the location of this golf course, is this really that unheard of? this seems like it could be a quite common occurance to me.

The funny part of that story is the people looking at and saying it's fake. Photoshopped.
Frankly, it doesn't look like that big a gator to me. In other pictures they posted, it doesn't look to be over 6 or 8' long. Adult, but not giant.
It's all about perspective.
