I have often noted record gun sales figures and snarked "those are rookie numbers". Well, via Insty we see this:
The FBI processed 3,639,224 NICS checks in July, the third highest on record.
That's not QotY. This is:
Only June and March of this year have experienced a heavier monthly volume in the entire history of the system. After subtracting administrative use, last month’s figure represents roughly 2 million firearm purchases. [Emphasis from me - Borepatch]
And remember - we don't have figures for August after the riots that have been burning down Blue cities this month. These aren't rookie numbers - these numbers are Murder's Row.

Those figures could be even higher. I am waiting for supply to catch up to demand so that prices (and availability) can improve. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.
What Greg said. I'm sure the number of checks and sales would be much higher if there was any product available.
Could you expand on administrative use? A comment elsewhere, which I can no longer find, claimed that New York City IIRC runs all its permitees every day through NCIS.
I've read that KY run CCW holders through NICS periodically. I suspect Illinois runs FOID card holders the same way, to see whose FOID to confiscate, which would contribute to our current high numbers.

Illinois is constantly running NICS checks on card holders looking for someone where they can revoke their FOID. These checks have nothing to do with firearm purchases. They just do it as a matter of SOP.

Is this really the case? Do you have a source on them conducting random random FOID searches? On what grounds do they revoke their FOID and is there due process for this?

They run the entire list of everyone who has a FOID through NICS every single day. They also run the list of CCW holders as a separate check, every single day.
That would bump up the numbers at least a little. This is from The Firearm Blog.
The people with a little foresight see the purge coming. Sadly it's too late for many of the others, including those in the dictatorships of the east and west coasts.
There are a lot of existing firearms being passed between fearful family members that
do not show on the FBI numbers. Many of these are now "new gun owners" who statistically
are "off the record".
