Once all the hemoglobin is impaired, the red blood cell is essentially turned into a Freightliner truck cab with no trailer and no ability to store its cargo.. it is useless and just running around with COVID-19 virus attached to its porphyrin. All these useless trucks running around not delivering oxygen is what starts to lead to desaturation, or watching the patient’s spo2 levels drop. It is INCORRECT to assume traditional ARDS and in doing so, you’re treating the WRONG DISEASE. Think of it a lot like carbon monoxide poisoning, in which CO is bound to the hemoglobin, making it unable to carry oxygen. In those cases, ventilators aren’t treating the root cause; the patient’s lungs aren’t ‘tiring out’, they’re pumping just fine. The red blood cells just can’t carry o2, end of story.It also talks about why Hydroxychloroquine is effective, even though Malaria is bacterial and the Kung Flu is a virus. This is exactly what the main stream media should be publishing but isn't (because they're all busy shouting ORANGE MAN BAD!!1!!eleventy!).

That's about all we know for sure, Sean - is that nobody knows for sure. The only honest players in this whole business are the ones that admit that too. The Usual Suspects are already running for the hills:

I suspect they will do as certain other cretins have, and claim that their fake lock downs and virtue signalling put the boots to the plague, and not give a second thought that they have just given the worst people a valid excuse to trample their rights. Further, they will ignore the cases where it has already been done.
A lie is off and running before the truth gets it boots on.
We do know more than that wild speculative article claims to know.
Those that do have real knowledge often site their sources and the sources have standing so we have the ability to interrogate them.
The article from Medium is at best meaningless and based on a poorly written paper that has not seen peer review nor and rigorous testing
besides a computer simulation that suggests it could happen.

Retired medical laboratory technologist here. I've spent many hours at a microscope looking at malaria. That critter, Plasmodium species, is a protozoal parasite that infects and reproduces inside red blood cells.
I have been puzzling over what kind of mechanism HCQ has that can treat such unrelated maladies as malaria, autoimmune disorders as Lupus and RA, and a virus like the Kung Flu.
The ability of hemoglobin to pick up oxygen in the lungs and be able to release it in the tissues is a very delicate balance in biochemistry. It's quite easy to mess up that balance in a thousand different ways.
The linked article is very good as far as it goes; there is a whole lot more we need to know about this particular bug. As I've said before in other forums, if this is really an escaped bioengineered weapon (whether intentionally or not) then ALL BETS ARE OFF.

Got a call from a friend that works as a microbiologist. He says, in the gentlest terms, that this is so completely inaccurate that it could only have been done deliberately.

The appearance of a novel virus outside of two state-sponsored bio-"research" laboratories in ChiComia is about as coincidental as a smallpox outbreak in the immediate vicinity of Ft. Detrick or Dugway Proving Grounds: zero chance of coincidence. That's based purely on statistical probabilities.
The mechanism of this virus in killing and injuring the body will eventually be sussed out in peer-reviewed journal articles, after lab research by expert analysis. Finding out that, and how, it effects RBCs and hemoglobin, rather than anything else, will not be surprising; but the exact process will be. What we don't know about it is legion. I'll wait for something authoritative.
