"The Hunt for Gollum" Internet Film

Two words can strike terror into the hearts of people who love a novel, a film, or a TV show:
Fan fiction.
Terror, because most is simply drek, written by amateurs for amateurs.

But what if you were to put together an Open Source film? Use the Internet to identify the best scriptwriters, the best actors, cameramen, music score? People who would contribute their time for free? What could you do with £3,000?

This:

40 minutes long. Insanely high production values. Yes, it looks patterned off of Peter Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings. It's fan fiction. But don't panic (no terror, please).

It will be released tomorrow, at 4:00 PM GMT (11:00 Eastern time), on the internet. Here.

Via Slashdot, where there's this:
Nasty, nasty fanses! The fanses violates the preciouss.... the preciousss copyrightses!

Heh. Tolkien Enterprises (owners of the trademarks) seems cool with this, since it's not for profit. Pretty cool, that.

UPDATE 2 May 2009 16:30: There's a second trailer:

Also updated the release location URL.

UPDATE 2 May 2009 16:50: Wow. There must be a hundred people listed in the crew. Digital special effects, cinematography, costumers, 2 dozen other categories. Donated time, donated filming locations (churches, it seems mostly). Nobody got paid a farthing. Just wow.

Albert, you're welcome. I had to post, because Mrs. Borepatch was tired of me saying "This is so insanely cool!" every 3 minutes.

Hmm, just got back home from a weekend away from the computer, thanks for linking this. It will no doubt help shorten the wait until the big-screen version of The Hobbit comes out.
