CMP Update

The Civilian Marksmanship Program has a limited number of M1 Garand rifles chambered in 7.62 NATO.  They have both the Mod-0 version for $900 and the Mod-1 version for $1200.

You probably don't want the Mod-0 because it doesn't do well with standard ammo, and in fact the CMP categorizes them as unservicable.  The value is all historical.

The Mod-1 versions are safe to use with 7.62 NATO.

In other words, mod 0 is a worn out, altered, historic, "desirable" piece of junk. For $900.
For $900 you can get a bet-your-life-on-it AR-10. Lighter, easier to service, easier, cheaper to get spare parts for, Want a 16 to 24 inch barrel? OK. Designed to be more accurate, right out of the box.You can hang any accessory on it that you want. If anything terminal happens to it, you can get another one tomorrow, for $900.
I've had 4 M-1 Garands, I'm all nostalgiced up. I sold my M1a for too much money and got an
AR-10 and an AR-15. Had an H&K G3 (91) and and 2 FALs, all good guns. I'll bet my life on the AR-10, it's ballistically the equivalent of a 30.06, but easier, cheaper to get ammo for.

The RM1308 Expert grade for $1150 looks like a better deal if you want a upgraded .308 Garand It has a new stock and barrel. The CMP is probably still the best place to buy a Garand. I will stick with the 30'06 and shoot either the Greek surplus or specific M1 loads from people like Winchester, Federal or Hornady.

Mike, as I understand it, the Mod 0 used a pressed-in bushing to convert the rifles to 7.62 NATO. Some of the rifles so converted could and did eject the bushings when fired.

The Mod 1s were rebarreled to 7.62 NATO.

Have a Navy M1 in 7.62 NATO. Bought it more than a decade ago. Really like it.
