I confess that My Favorite Year is my personal favorite of O'Toole's movies; I enjoyed Lawrence of Arabia, but there were too many inaccuracies in that for my taste, and I thought that O'Toole was chewing the scenery.
It was O'Toole's introductory film role, in a bona fide epic David Lean film, toe-to-toe with the likes of Anthony Quinn, Omar Sharif, Anthony Quayle, Alec Guiness, Jack Hawkins, Jose Ferrer, and Claude Rains, who between them had (at just that point in 1962) already had 143 stage roles, 290 film roles, 15 Oscar nominations, 5 Oscars, 2 BAFTA awards and 6 nominations, 2 Emmys, and 2 Tony awards. (Yes, I tallied them.)
And rookie O'Toole, in his first film performance, eclipsed all of them.
I dare suggest that such a legendary debut was not "chewing the scenery".
Gregory Peck's performance in To Kill A Mockingbird notwithstanding, O'Toole was robbed, every time he came up for an Oscar award.

Peter O'Toole was robbed every year he was nominated, eight times in total.
The Honorary Oscar they awarded him in 2002 was a shabby way of apologizing for snubbing him for 40 years of his entire magnificent career.
