The Queen Of The World and I are back from our Son-In-Law's retirement from the US Navy.
25 years, ending as a Senior Chief. He would have made Master Chief but would have had to have another sea duty, and Abby finally put her foot down. I don't know that I blame her.
I must say based on the other Senior and Master Chiefs I met there that these senior NCOs are absolutely the backbone of the fleet.
Bravo Zulu, Steve!

Good for him -- I wonder about his thoughts on some of Hegseth's reforms.
Backbone of the Fleet, the Squadron, the brigade, all the way back to the Legion and Phalanx.
Yes ask him BP! I fear he might have jumped out too soon…
They are, have been, and will be!
Congratulations, Senior Chief, and thank you for your dedicated service. You have sacrificed and served many many times more than most in this country.
I'll put money that you are going to soon miss the self-discipline of others, loyalty to others and mission, and organization with detail.
BobF, CMSgt, USAF, (Ret.)
These days, they can't even put on E-9 unless they accept sea duty orders. I get it though, to be the backbone of the fleet you gotta be in the fleet. We have a few STGCMs (Master Chief Sonar Tech-Surface), but they're only on shore duty after their 3 years afloat. That gets them to 30+ years and a nice retirement, but the family toll must be weighed. There's no such thing as a 6 month deployment now either. 9 is standard.
If he's anything like this old CG chief, He's probably saying "WHAT THE HELL TOOK SO LONG???" I saw the early festering of DEI in the Coast Guard back in the 90's when the 'Guard was trying to jam women and "minorities" into rates they were COMPLETELY UNQUALIFIED for. Any dissent was quashed summarily... THANK YOU, Mr. Hegseth!!!
Convey my congrats to the SCPO! Wish him fair winds and following seas from this old Coast Guard CPO! Your SIL DID GOOD being able to put on the E-9 in 25 years in the Navy! I knew squids back in the day that were retiring after more than 20 years as E-6's because they couldn't get past the "good ol' boy" Chief's board! If a Navy sailor pissed off the wrong CPO, he'd NEVER put on anchors! That happened to my neighbor. He couldn't make CPO because the Chief's Board determined... wait for it... he DIDN'T DRINK ENOUGH! The Coast Guard doesn't have Chiefs' Boards. Promotion is based strictly on merit, time-in-service, and time-in-grade...
Your post reminds me of a conversation I had with my brother while he was in the Air Force. He had achieved Master Sargent, and was being transferred. I asked him how he would deal with Second Lieutenants he encountered. He told me he would tell them where to shove it. I asked if that would have consequences. He replied that if it did, he would go talk to his current General (my brother kept his home computers working) who was being transferred to my brother's new base. It let me know who were the nuts and bolts of the military.
I remember 40 years ago the advice to every E6 from the CPO mess was work harder and try again. That Mess also included a number of red crows because that Mess and the Navy they came from accepted that people make mistakes and move on. I sure hope that attitude returns because it was the 'winning' one.
Congrats to the Senior Chief on his service and retirement. Fair winds and following seas.
Thank you, everybody
