Environmentalism, explained in a single chart
Carbon emissions (= energy use) are strictly correlated with increased life expectancy. The correlation is quite frankly stunning, and explains the utter collapse of the Kyoto Protocol and proposed Copenhagen replacement treaty. The Third World told the Dirty Commie western enviros to stick it where the renewable energy sun don't shine. "Clean" "renewable" energy is 5x to 20x times the cost of coal fired electricity, everywhere in the world. That's masked in the West because of massive subsidies for solar and wind. The emerging economies can't afford that.
Quite frankly, this is elementary common sense, only a deep mystery to a lefty who needs to rationalize his ridiculous dogma to himself. Odd how the rationalization takes the form of precisely the same policy recommendations whether it's disaster from Global Warming or disaster from an impending ice age:
It's a crisis! Millions will die! So turn over the economy to us. Damn democracy getting in the way ...

Consider now that the next projected solar maximum keeps getting pushed back (Oh. Not this month? Hmmm. NExt Month, maybe?) to the point where some are saying we may be going into the next solar grand minimum, I will be very interested to see where the temperatures go, and where the environmentalists will go.
Silent Spring becomes The fountain of Youth... the horror, the horror!
It doesn't matter what the world-ending crisis du jour is, the solution is always major government intervention with corresponding super-onerous taxes and expenditures so that the up-and-comers have their effort taxed to oblivion, enabling the royals to retain their elite positions.
Only then will disaster be averted, which disaster always looks surprisingly like "something different from how it is for me now".
[Watermelon Enviro-leftist]Oh, and what's with all this hating on Rwanda? What did Rwanda do to whoever put this graph together, and where did this person get the money to put such a hate-filled graph together, anyway? We should all be more like Rwanda, Good Earth, Bean Field, and all showing solidarity and resting more lightly on the earth -- It's self evident why that's a better way![/Watermelon Enviro-leftist]

Probably, when you're talking about commercially generated energy. However, I suspect I can put together a construction and power generation strategy that'll cost a whole lot less than the ninety-odd grand (that's as in ~$90,000) the power company would jack me for if I wanted the grid run out to my Idaho digs.
Which is almost certainly not the same sort of thing you're talking about. I haven't done a formal study on this stuff--whaddayawant from a trade-school monkey?--but I suspect the basic problem with renewable/whateveryouwannacallit energy is that it doesn't scale worth a damn. I can can probably run a 600-square-foot cabin on homebrew power (for a given value of "run"), but good luck pulling it off for a whole town.
