Finally!

I grew up in the great frozen north and so when we moved to sunny southwest Florida, I got a bird of paradise flower for the patio.  That was something like 16 months ago and the danged thing never flowered.  Until yesterday:

Only one flower, but a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and all that.

Very nice. Plant it in a sunny spot. I have one that is around 10 years old and is 15 feet tall.

After being stationed in Hawaii we were stationed in California a few years later. The house we rented had several of those along the back fence. We tried them here, but experience didn't count for anything and it resulted in failure. I love those plants -- so unique and so beautiful. Happy to hear you are successful! Would love to see progress pictures!

The Strelitzia won't flower until it is around 3 to 5 years old. There's lots more at the link.
