Thanks for the link, my friend!
That rant was the manifestation of several conversations with users over the last couple of, well, I guess months, and everything I wished I could get away with telling them, exactly how I wish I could tell them. I probably could, if I put it in not quite so blunt terms, but I was and am not sure if I'd want to risk it. My position is as much customer service as it is technical support, so I don't have as much leeway to say things as I often wished I did. Yay for blogs, amirite? :D
If you care about your data there are three things: * Use Linux or BSD * Use ZFS snapshots and replication (I never thought it was possible for a man to fall in love with a filesystem) * Use tarsnap
I had 4 out of 6 drives fail within 72 hours of each other. Never lost one bit of data.

Yep, I do daily incremental backups, and a weekly full backup.
What do you guys use as a storage medium? I have a couple of dedicated hard drives that are ONLY used for the backups.
And yes, I've done a restore from bare metal just to make sure I know how to do it.

I just use a 500 GB Toshiba USB solid-state drive, similar to this one:
