In which Borepatch is an idiot

I got not one, but two reloading manuals (Lyman and Lee, thanks for asking).  Attentive readers will recall me complaining that neither discussed .303 Brit.

Well, of course they both did - attentiveness is its own reward - plus there was one that came in the box of .303 dies.  So I'm set for recipes.  Now I just need to pick one and do some actual reloading.

I guess you're right about attentiveness, because I've been an inattentive reader. I don't remember you complaining about the lack of .303 loads.

Good luck with the loading, boss. I hope to build some .380 ammo this weekend myself, and maybe some .45-70.

Are you going to take the Enfield to Appleseed? I think I'm going to take my Mini-14. I'd take the PSL but they caution about using a rifle with a muzzle brake for prone shooting.

IMR 4895 or 4831, and a nice 174 grain boat tail bullet like the #165542 Hornady. Start around the lowest charge weight, and work up (if you see the need) a little. Observe fired cases very closely for pressure sign, especially the web just in front of the base.

Man.... are you going to have fun!

One criterion for powder selection is loading density. That is why I don't use WW 231 for pistol loads, as it is way too easy to double charge with plenty of room in the case. Rifle powders vary from spherical to what looks like little pencil leads. Old standbys like IMR 4350 would be one to consider, of course.
Have fun!

You need at least five manuals for reference.
I will check the books against loaddata.com to select a load.

Borepatch,
Here's a link to some work I did a few years ago developing a load for my Enfields.

I hope you find this useful.

BP,

Buddy of mine who lives in Groton, MA has an absolutely CHERRY jungle carbine. We've run some PRVI Partisan fodder through it. The 180 grain is NICE. I'd love to see a hot load from that rifle in near dusk conditions . . .

Regards,

Dave, I don't think I'm going to take the Enfield to Appleseed. If I do, it will be to get some help finding the zero at 200 yards.

Taking the SKS for the centerfire rifle.
