I need to watch this

It sounds like "Moon over Parador" meets "The Seven Samurai".

Kagemusha - it's neither !

The story concerns a medieval Daimyo dies suddenly and as he's about to go to war to defend his lands, womens honour etc. it is a bit inconvenient to say the least.

So, what to do? It turns out that a drink soaked peasant is the exact spitting image of the deceased Daimyo.

The body of the Daimyo is stuffed into a huge jar of sake which is then dropped into a lake as an offering to the Gods of War and the peasant takes his place.

The wife and concubines of the Daimyo spot the impostor (he doesn't have a scar that the Daimyo picked up fighting) but for the security of the fiefdom, keep quiet.

The peasant then goes on to live up to the reputation of the Daimyo.

Hardly a heartwarming tale of rags to riches but the cinematography is superb and the plot is much richer than outlined here.

Recommended!

I don't know if I could sit through it again. It is very long and well, boring. I saw it when it came out, and all the "smart" people raved about it. I think you need to be Japanese to really appreciate it , I guess, or maybe I am just not one of the smart ones.
