A Holiday Charity recommendation

I went on a ride with the local HOG chapter yesterday: Toys For Tots, delivering toys to the Salvation Army.  It was pretty nippy.  But I had a very interesting conversation with one of the SA people who explained the vetting process they do when people ask for help.  Almost all of the people who get assistance are working multiple jobs - they just can't make ends meet.

This holiday season, if you're looking for a group to give money to the Salvation Army is one to think about.

  1. One of my favorite charities. They will help anyone that needs it and the people that run the organization don't get rich in the process.....

  2. My dad was a huge supporter of the Salvation Army. He saw during his Army days, a time when the Red Cross was selling blankets on the street to people who were in need, while down the street, the Salvation Army was giving them away. So I always try to drop 20 bucks in one of their kettles during the Christmas season.
I would much rather give to a group that I know does good work, than to feed the huge machine, where you don't know how the money is being spent. My wife and I also give to those who seem to be having a hard time. I always carry a 50 in hiding in my wallet, and will give it to a young mother who is struggling, or to some family in need. That way, I have at least got a hand in who gets the help.

  3. Yep, SA is a great organization. Reminds me, I need to go pick up some toys to drop off at TFT!

  4. The Salvation Army is, I think, the best of the bunch. They don't get rich, and they serve people in need better than the rest. I rang the bell for them a while ago, and it was an enlightening experience to see who would give, or to hear the story of someone who had been helped.

  5. The Salvation Army is the best of the best. I hit the kettle at every opportunity during the holidays, and a fair bit of my working wardrobe comes from the thrift store (tweed jackets, blazers, sport coats, wool trousers, wool sweaters, neckties -- you gotta haunt the place to find stuff in your size and in good condition, but it's worth it).
