Atocha

On this day in 2004, a series of bombs on Madrid's commuter rail system killed 191 and injured 1800. The bombings were planned and carried out by an al Qaeda inspired radical muslim group.

Three days later, the pro-American party lost the election.

The new government of Jose Zapatero pulled Spain out of the Iraq war, leaving al Qaeda in possession of the field of battle.
