He was an electrician and a handy man who liked everything but painting, and was good at everything but painting. He and my Mom built their own house in their spare time . When he got old, I included him in all of my work and hobby activities. He's gone several years now having passed at 93. I know how important that daily routine is for them.
You may have blindsided 'Jerry the Geek', but not me, as I always keep that 'dusty room' Kleenex box near whenever I see a 'Brigid Guest Post'
Happy Birthday Dad. I'm not sur...You blind-sided me with that one.

I'm not sure what I want to say, but I need to say something.

Yes, my father was an important influence to me, teaching me lessons by example rather than pontificating to me. I've tried to return the obligation with my children and grandchildren, but I suspect it's easier when they live closer than an adjacent state ... or a foreign country.

My parents are dead, and I miss them both for what they gave to me on a daily basis. I didn't know my grandparents .. on my mother's side, they died before I was born; on my father's side, they died before I became very responsible.

My paternal grandfather lived to the age of 95, and had so many grandchildren the he never learned our names. About all I remember about him was his enormous eyebrows, like miniature mustaches; he was to 'macho' to allow his barber (my father) to trim them.

Reading your missive, I am disappointed that the clearest memory of him was his eyebrows.

You are the beneficiary of a gift which not all of us have received.
You are blessed, as I feel blessed by your wiklingness to share your memories.

Now I must go and learn to be a better Granpa.Jerry The Geekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16181610016755426448noreply@blogger.com
