Happy Birthday, Ethernet
Digital Equipment Corporation, Intel, and Xerox released the Ethernet spec on this day in 1980. This is why old timers sometimes refer to it as "DIX Ethernet".
Ethernet, Arcnet and Token Ring. Worked on them all. Once etherernet stole star topology it was the hands down favorite. I remember on site in the early days that one floor lost connection for an hour over lunch. We did and on site visit and found they had three workstations running a screen saver from a remote server. It took all the bandwidth to support that. We deleted the screen saver. Fun times.
How many readers know what a vampire tap was and where you installed it on the Thicknet cable? Or, AUI cables
ReplyDeleteYep, Internet 1, and NO tier one support...LOL
ReplyDeleteHave yu tried turning the unit off then back on?
DeleteBob Metcalfe should have a trading card.
ReplyDeleteDIX pics or it didn't happen.
ReplyDeleteSure beats dealing with arcnet.
ReplyDeleteOnce again showing up to the party 5 years late, IBM countered with Token Ring.
ReplyDeleteMy copy of the blue book is on my bookshelf...
