It might the Cougars, the Owls, the Warriors, or any other of a thousand team names. When you get to the outskirts of a town with a high school, there will be a sign, a statue, or a billboard with the team mascot welcoming you. When you walk into the gas station or the grocery store, there will be pictures of the team. High school football matters to these towns. There's history and bragging rights on the line.
In Oakley Kansas, it was the Plainsmen.
There's even a variant in the small towns in Texas. They play six man football. There's just not enough kids in the school to field an eleven man team. Here's today's look at America.
One of my sisters-in-law is from Oakley. My wife's family and their in-laws are all from western KS. We are thinking about moving to Kansas from KC, MO. As a native of southeast TX, I wouldn't be happy about the winters, but I like being able to see 10 miles in every direction.
ReplyDeleteSix-man football was invented in Nebraska. I used to frequently have to drive from Houston or Dallas to Omaha and back. There's a little town on US 81, maybe Bruning, NE, that has a sign that says "Home of six-man football."
Yep, we have some areas in North Texas where we are that have six man teams. Small towns are PROUD of their kids!
