The political story of the West in the 21st Century has been one of devolution of power. Several EU referenda were soundly voted down (e.g. Netherlands and France) although the Powers That Be made the publics there vote again and again until the "got it right". Brexit was a shock to the elites, as was the election (and re-election) of Donald Trump.
All of these are statements of majorities rejecting the Conventional Wisdom of centralized power controlled by credentialed "expert" elites (scare quotes used intentionally).
Now it's Canada's turn. Alberta is making serious noises about leaving Canada and joining the USA. Here is a forceful statement from Alberta's Premier laying out the causes of their unhappiness with Ottawa, and quite frankly making numerous demands of the central government.
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
That's what this speech is. And it includes an "or else" after the demands, that next year will see an Alberta referendum.
This seems like it's pretty big news.
The question is whether or not the rest of Canada will let them leave peacefully. Alberta seceding would cut the land routes between British Columbia and the rest of the populous parts of Canada. Looking at maps, I see no east-west roads or rail lines through the Northwest Territories.

DeleteIt depends on how friendly Canada is feeling after this happened. I imagine Canada won't be feeling to friendly if Alberta leaves them and joins the USA.
DeleteWell, if the US would be willing to defend Alberta, Canada couldn't do much about it. And the support would have to be transported across an ocean like the French did after 1777. You could just motor up from Montana.

So politely Canadian, she is. It sounds more like the time before The Declaration of Independence, when the 13 Colonies tried to get represented in Parliament. I think I will invest in popcorn futures.

But as our esteemed Blog Host notes… people are finally starting to question and talk about problems - without the approval or consent of the powers that be. And some progress is finally being seen in reversing the globalist tyranny especially in the States. You can’t run a country with people like this in charge.
ReplyDeleteThey better split off the Bank of Alberta from the rest of Canada because the first thing the fascists do in Canada is steal OPM. Ware the Argentine approach as well where all investors with $ deposits were assured their $ deposits would be untouched when the peso was devalued only to find our scumbag banks in NY sitting on Argentine's $ happily turned them into worthless peso deposits overnight.

Having worked in Canada my observation is that Canada is not really a country, it's a bunch of provinces that all hate each other. Alberta's specific beef is that the provinces around them won't let them build pipeline infrastructure to export their abundant energy resources to other parts of Canada so they just export to the US. They'd like to pipe it out to the West Coast but the libtards that run BC won't let them.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive lady. I've been to Alberta, fifty years ago. Awed by the wheat fields and Banff and the mountains. Wish them very well, however it plays out. I can't see Ottawa flexing. Something will have to give.
