Dear God: it would be OK to let this hurricane season be over ...

That dot that says "M" on Wednesday at 7PM?  Yeah, that's right over my house.  They're calling for Cat 4 and a 12 foot tidal surge.  We're on moderately high ground - if we flood then 80% of Florida is basically gone, but the folks on the barrier islands are looking at a fresh hell coming at them.

As is Joint Base McDill.  Maybe if it hits there the military can get some quicker rescue going when it hits there than they did in North Carolina.  Yes, that's pretty nasty to write.  The fact that you can write that is even nastier, IMHO.

This seems to be a useful site, if you're on the water:

I give NOAA a lot of flak for their climate change nonsense, but this is exactly what you would want from a world class national weather bureau.  The model may be wrong - all models are - but the fact that the tidal surge arrives at high tide is no bueno for McDill.  I hope they are taking action, and I hope that people along the water are evacuating.

Lord Almighty, what a hurricane season.

  1. Stay safe. And evacuate! Keep us posted if you can but the most important thing is to keep you and your love ones safe!

  2. It's over both our houses. I'm high enough that hopefully the flooding isn't too bad, but mainly worry about the wind bringing trees down. Stay safe.

  3. My nephew is in St. Pete, I imagine they are in the same boat. Or will soon need one. Best wishes, to you the the QotW.

  4. I saw way too many hurricanes in my 38 years of living there.
I still have friends in Central Florida that I'm worrying about.
Will add you and yours to the watch list. Good luck!

  5. Yes! Keep us poasted, BP.

And remember what we agreed: if you get yourself kilt - I get your M1 Garand.

    Take care of yourselves.

    1. Justine Turdue won't let you have it, Filthie. So it should go to some good deserving Floridian.

In other news, I've always wanted a Garand...

  6. If you haven't already, head for higher ground - preferably farther north. Either way, please take care of yourselves.

  7. My grandmother remembered a hurricane that pushed a storm surge up Tampa Bay to what was way east of what is now I-75.

Too bad TB doesn't have storm barriers like what Holland or the Thames has.

  10. You may be high enough for the storm surge, but don't underestimate what 120-150 mile an hour winds and rain so hard you can't 5 feet is like. If you stay, be very ready.

  11. Stay safe brother! Prayers your way & for all in the path.

  12. You know your situation far better than I do, but if you're high enough/far enough away to not worry about storm surge that's the most dangerous stuff. The predicted path on the NHC has been remarkably consistent, staying within around 10 to 15 miles N/S peak to peak at the point where it comes ashore and then across the state on the way out.

  13. Good luck, and I hope you and yours stay safe and get through this unscathed.

  14. We're just north of Jacksonville. We'll be on the north side of the cone when it crosses the peninsula, but definitely in the cone when it passes by the east coast. We'll definitely get wind and rain, but we're far enough inland to avoid the storm surge. Prayers for those who live along the west coast of Florida and in the direct path of the storm.

  15. Yeah, God must be busy doing something elsewhere. Either that or he/she's developing one hell of a sense of humor. Friend was 40 miles from Asheville and has stories of first floor flooding ON A MOUNTAIN and a boulder hitting the side of the house. And now Milton. Never cared for that name anyway.

You are going to get hit a lot worse than I (between I-4 and Kissimmee) -- hope you end up best possible. Crap. Another eye over the roof.
