Borepatch you are a history buff I know, and I think you may have posted this historical tidbit in previous posts, but Alexander is also famous for an early system of keeping track of time.
It seems guards were issued rags to wear on their wrist that were soaked in a vegetable dye that over the course of 8 hours would slowly change color from red to blue. When they turned blue, the watch was up, and the soldier was replaced on duty.
Surely, you have heard of Alexander's Rag Time Bands?
