There is an excellent book called Travel in the Ancient World by Lionel Casson that goes into great detail about old-timey travel. He goes into who was doing it and why (merchants, pilgrims, tourist, etc.) and discusses taverns, inns and popular destinations. If you like that sort of stuff I highly recommend it.

ReplyDeleteI've been on a number of these roads. Sometimes driving along at 120 kph. Sometimes walking through a pasture with no company but sheep.
