Vince Guaraldi - Linus and Lucy

This is, of course, from the A Charlie Brown Christmas special.  The Studio Execs were nervous about the show: the explicit Christian themes, the use of child actors, the lack of a laugh track.  Of course, the show was a sensation: almost half of everyone who had the TV on that evening had it tuned to that show.  This year is the show's 55th anniversary (!).

And yes, the music is as iconic as everything else from the show.

  1. How sad that Vince Guaraldi died at 47. What a talent, and his music is forever.

  2. For years I thought it was Oscar Peterson. Never looked at the credits, I guess.

  3. This year, I read someone's article on this show and learned something I've never noticed. I can't say I've seen it 55 times, but I've seen it many times.

When Linus recites the passage from Luke chapter 2 about the birth of Christ, he drops his security blanket at the point where he quotes the angels saying, "Do not be afraid." He drops his security blanket and doesn't pick it up until he's done reciting the passage and picks it up to walk off stage.

For those of us who read Peanuts every day while growing up, I'd bet no image is as well-associated as Linus and his security blanket, yet he drops it on that cue.

  4. It's not Christmas without this. One of those "treasured childhood memory" things.
